Venus continues to blaze bright and high in the western sky after sunset, and Jupiter’s still hangin’ in there. My lovely and talented wife took this photo with my phone a couple nights ago when we stopped by our local reservoir to do some light-polluted stargazing. Venus is up top, then Jupiter below it, and Boston College lights reflect off the water. Feel free to ask her about the aquatic rat that nearly attacked her as she captured this gorgeous little scene (seen at the very bottom of the photo, peeking above the water).
Catch it while you can, folks. After the next couple months, Venus is going away for a while. In fact, she won’t really be around in the evening again until the summer of 2015, when she plans another enchanting twilight dance with Jupiter.
So this month is a pretty great opportunity to see the planet Mercury, so I took the opportunity to go check it out. I don’t think I’d seen Mercury before this weekend, but I have now. Mars was also visible on the opposite edge of the sky, meaning one can see 5 planets (including Earth) were one to go to a nice wide open space just after sunset.
Also I took some pictures of the moon with my cellphone through a telescope last night, and I got a decent detail shot of some craters. Enjoy.
No story today. I leave you with a benediction from the great Jack Donaghy of 30 Rock:
“Put your mental burden in my mind-vice, and I will crush it.”
I wrote a poem yesterday when I saw a thong alone on a laundry table in my building’s laundry room. Enjoy.
A thong is on a table in the building where I live.
I see it and I wonder what attention I should give.
I do not want to stare, but then, it isn’t everyday
You see a stranger’s thong in such a normalizing way.
Was it left by careless error in its pink and crumbled state,
And would she be embarrassed if she realized its fate?
Is she sorting through her laundry, thinking “Fuck, where did it go?
Dammit, I just bought that thing not seven days ago.”
Or is it just some power trip, left there to be found?
Does she get off on leaving all her underwear around?
Maybe it’s all part of some big game she likes to play,
Set down there to brighten up her lover’s stressful day.
It’s been there for a half an hour, and I start to believe
This satin thong was planted there for someone just like me.
To provoke imagination and to find the beauty of
The little things in life that I don’t recognize enough.
I thank my unknown neighbor for the gift she had to give,
The thong that’s on a table in the building where I live.
This is how I imagine most conversations between Sean Lennon and Julian Lennon going.
SL: Hey Jules.
JL: Howzit goin’ mate?
SL: Alright, alright. How’s yer mum?
JL: Times are tough, ya know, but she’s doin’ fine. Yours?
SL: She’s doin’ well, in the middle of an art show. A similar type thing to where she met Dad, ya know.
JL: Ah, right. Good time in life for me, that.
SL: Hey, I’m sorry mate, don’t mean to bring up the divorce and that.
JL: Not a problem, ya know. Least I got ‘Hey Jude’ out of it, you know. What have you got?
SL: Hey, Julian, I got ‘Beautiful Boy’ ya know, don’t slag that song off, alright?
JL: Right, right, cuz everyone knows ‘Beautiful Boy’ nowadays and no one remembers ‘Hey Jude’ right?
SL: Bugger off, ya twat, at least Dad wrote that song for me. Yours was written by that twit Paul coz he felt bad for ya, yeah?
JL: Paul treated me very well once Dad left, ya poofter. And either way, Dad wrote ‘Good Night’ for me, didja forget that?
SL: Oh, that sappy Disney song that he pawned off to Ringo?? Listen, mate, you keep your ‘Hey Jude’ and your ‘Good Night’ and I’ll listen to the actual proof that Dad loved me enough to write a song and sing it to my face.
JL: Fuck off, Sean.
SL: Fuck off, Jude.
Just writing to let you know that I have put all the songs from that old crappy FB profile onto Soundcloud, which is much better for everyone. You can download them from there if you want, or not!
So I’m trying out a new type of story here. It’s called “Three Day Weekend”. It is a serialized story I won’t really plan in advance, and all the individual stories take place in the same narrative world. We’ll see where it goes. Hope you all enjoy it.
No stories or poems today. Just an assignment. Listen.
