hundred word wednesday – “the machine”

A little soft sci-fi for you today. This one is dedicated to all the machines in your life.

He had carried it this far. The machine was whirring and humming, and really didn’t seem to be worth the trouble, but he knew he had to get where they had told him to go.

He picked up the small device and took a few more steps toward his destination, and freedom. This was when the machine intervened.

It went silent and began to unfold. Startled, he dropped it to the ground. It continued to grow outward, metal plates appearing as if from nowhere, then expanding impossibly.

He knew then that his task was hopeless, and that they had lost.
