Here’s your precise amount of words for the week. I think we have all been in a similar place, even if we don’t want to discuss it. I feel it is my duty as a writer to be honest about the world. You’re welcome.

He was sitting in the car with the engine off when it happened. He had finished eating the shawarma wrap about 10 minutes earlier, and he was halfway through his Coke.

It started as a familiar buildup of pressure in his esophagus. The gas worked its way up as it had a thousand times before, and he prepared himself by opening his mouth.

But it wasn’t just a burp. Sure, it sounded like a burp, and for a second, it felt like one. But at the tail end, he felt a wetness on his chin, and smelled the vomit.

  1. Burp hunting is difficult, but Diana thought she had found a good one. Pudgy, with a hurried look. He carried his takeout from the food truck in a meaty paw.

    Diana adjusted her lawn chair and waited. She imagined the tell-tale open mouth and slight chest heave. The ephemeral smell inside the man’s Subaru.

    No, wait. Not a burp. Not a burp at all. The man vomited on his shirt.

    Diana curled her lips in disappointment. But inside she was thrilled. The line between burp and vomit was a thin one. And it was that line which made this exciting.
