hundred word wednesday – “a forest for ethan”

In Hundred Word Wednesdays on February 23, 2011 at 11:55 am

I return from my brief hiatus with a tale of youth and hope, and a wish for the early arrival of spring.

It was just the kind of day to climb a tree, but they didn’t have any trees in their new neighborhood. “Just my luck,” thought young Ethan. “The first nice day of the year and I can’t enjoy it.”

He tried collecting insects, but this didn’t do much more than distract him. He tried imagining he was climbing a tree, but this just made his hands and feet itch to touch real bark.

Options exhausted, he pestered his mother to take him to the store. They bought an oak sapling. Ethan planted it, then sat beside it, and waited.
