hundred word wednesday – “battle”

In Hundred Word Wednesdays on October 6, 2010 at 12:08 pm

It’s Wednesday again you guys! Last week I had some great reader submissions, go check ’em out if you haven’t already.  I’m hopeful that we’ll see more of the same quality this week. I’m kind of a fantasy nerd, so I tried my hand at that genre. Enjoy, and comment with your tiny (95-100 word) stories!

A horn sounded, echoing off the cliffs and dispersing through the fog, giving no clues about the direction from which it came.  Jon’s pulse quickened, as it always did before a fight. Inhuman snarls drifted through the air, and Jon felt doubt. He had fought the creatures dozens of times before, but surely his luck was spent. His companions were shifting uneasily; he was not alone in his thoughts.

Without warning, a creature appeared out of the mist directly in front of him, followed quickly by five more. The need to survive swallowed his doubt, and he entered the fray.

  1. The creature passed gas, the concussive sound echoing through the fog. The air smelled of dead leaves and the changing of the seasons. That special smell reminded the creature of his first mate, and his first litter. Distracting thoughts, and he tried to brush them aside and focus on the moment. A pack of humans were nearby. Violent, vengeful humans. Careless of deed, killers and scalpers. They did not even have a name for his kind. Just ‘creature.’

A wind lifted a patch of fog and the creature saw a human standing in the mud.
